Portrait Hans Hushan

RawPop

Pop aggrandizes and makes fun of the banality of social realities, via the everyday artifacts of consumption and social status, or media idols. It robs them off of their complexity, offering a speech-bubble-simplification that is at the same time glamorous, comic and overwhelming.

Hans Hushan’s RAW POP deconstructs this bubble by sheer force, breaking it with archaic, abstract expressionism and classic collage, intermingling painting, photography and sculpture, bending, debunking or rephrasing popular stereotypes.

Today’s mass production of paintings, and a deluge of digital images have become a cliché of art in and of themselves. The plethora of pictures in mass media obliterates their content, wherefore Hushan destroys it completely and rearranges the few remaining fragments, setting them up in new cultural and historical contexts, giving them fresh complexity and a new, almost mythological meaning. However, the question of meaning becomes arbitrary in RAW POP, because Hushan plays the meanings of these fragments off against each other, often in a raw, archaic way.

This archaic force lies at the heart of RAW POP, looking for yet unused possibilities of visual “mobilization”, using a primitive, or even tribal aesthetic, with their rough outlines, haptic forms and blatant color contrasts. RAW POP asks the un-asked questions of our exceedingly visual age and dares to offer answers.

On another level RAW POP examines the status of gender, idolization, Machismo, rebellion, ubiquity of the media and isolation of the individual. Behind the apparent contradictions of our times lies the search for identity in a world of virtual complacency, all too often leading to emptiness, loss of values (or virtues), loss of solidarity and loss of passion – Hushan explores this with emotional vehemence. To resist this aporia has always been the domain of the avantgarde, being at the same time pioneer and breeding ground for revolution, against the abolishment of cultural diversity, industrial standardization, monopoly on education and information, and particularly against the creeping secrecy in which all this now happens.

Today’s most expensive and successful art is an intrinsic part of capitalism, using market mechanisms and selling out on its original stance, “avant-garde” not to be found in it anymore. The embarrassment of this has not only become unbearable, but is eroding the system itself. The career artist has given up on his or her critical, political position, or simply utilizes it. We need another Arte Povera, more “hand made”, more raw, more “sensorial” art. We need authenticity. RAW POP is one of the ways toward it.
